Site Plan: Weaving Historical Layers into the Present

In my site plan, I have sought to space out zones based on a collective study of historical maps, bringing these past spaces into the present while considering non-human elements. This mapping process is integral to embedding my design within the evolving narrative of Channelsea, where industries, communities, and environmental memory intersect.

Key considerations in my site plan include:

  • Temporal Shifts: Integrating historical spatial conditions to show how the landscape has transformed over time.

  • Infrastructure of New Natures: Establishing a layout where water, nature, and built interventions coexist dynamically.

  • Programmatic Zoning: A structured approach that transitions from non-human-oriented spaces to human-centered environments, capturing the vibrance and interaction of both.

This drawing, printed at A1 scale, sets the stage for presenting my Forensis research, illustrating how environmental histories and current site conditions inform my vision for ‘new natures.’

Split-Screen Essay Film: Engaging with Human and Non-Human Actors

The split-screen essay film visually narrates the programmatic layout of my design, exploring interactions between human and non-human spaces. By juxtaposing these elements, I aim to depict:

  • The Vibrance of Suggested Spaces: A sensory portrayal of how the designed spaces will function and feel.

  • Transition from Non-Human to Human-Based Spaces: A spatial and temporal journey showing the movement from non-human related areas to curated human interventions.

  • Variety in Engagement: A layered depiction of change over spaces—whether through water, fish ladders, exhibition, conservation, farm, market and restaurant.

Integrating the Film into the Narrative

The film, 'New Natures', serves as an extension of the site plan, bringing its themes to life through motion and composition. The split-screen technique enables a simultaneous exploration of:

  • Human vs. Non-Human: The coexistence of ecological and anthropogenic forces shaping the landscape.

  • Stillness vs. Movement: Highlighting the dynamic nature of water systems and urban flow.

By integrating past site conditions with a forward-thinking design approach, the film and site plan together offer a compelling vision of environmental and spatial transformation. ‘New Natures’ is not just a visual representation; it is an argument for rethinking urban ecological integration, emphasizing the agency of non-human elements in shaping future landscapes.
